When I first started, I took over the recently established SWESRS phone tree and 6 months on, many of the phone tree volunteers are continuing to support other members of the community – phoning weekly (or in some cases less frequently) and helping with shopping and other practical tasks.
I am delighted that 3 of the phone tree volunteers have since agreed to join the SWESRS Care Team but of course, I would always welcome further new members, as we acknowledge that supporting one another can take many forms, from telephone calls, to groceries shopping and even writing birthday cards to members. In addition, when it is possible again for households to mix, it would be great to be able arrange for more home and hospital visits to our unwell or lonely and socially isolated members.
The last 6 months have been difficult for us all and unfortunately, I do feel that the winter months ahead, could prove to be even more challenging. SWESRS’ adapting to the use of Zoom has been fantastic. From regular religious services, quizzes, interesting lectures and discussions, to the weekly check in and chat session on Thursdays at 3pm and the fortnightly ‘Tuesday Lunch Club Reinvited – Tea@2’. Via the use of Zoom and other technology, we have been able to continue to offer a social, cultural and spiritual welcome to our members which is so key at this time.
