In this week's parashah, Moses spells out the blessings and curses for entering the Land of Israel.

If they are faithful to God, they will receive abundant rewards. But if they ignore God, they will be conquered and destroyed. It is a system of karma, where everything the Jews do will come back at them.

Rationally, it's hard to accept such dire warnings and grandiose promises as serious. I nevertheless think it is true that we get out of life what we put in.

If you invest in a place and fill it with good values, you do reap the rewards. If you neglect it, you'll certainly see it ruined.

The same is true of religious community. The more time and energy you give it, the more it can thrive.

We have just elected a new committee of Honorary Officers. These are great people who have decided to make the synagogue's mission part of their life's work. We are incredibly grateful to them, and hope they will fill this year with many blessings.
