Annual Remembrance Service

Sunday November 11, 2018 @ 10:45 am

Annual Remembrance Service to fallen WWI Canadian Soldier Second Lieutenant Harry Jassby - Sunday 11th November, at 10:45am, St. Peter's Churchyard on Oaks Lane.

SWESRS will conduct the annual remembrance service for Jewish pilot Harry Jassby who is buried at St. Peter's Church on Oaks Lane - a service made more poignant by the relatively recent discovery that our previous Rabbi, Nancy Morris, and Second Lieutenant Jassby were related.

Second Lieutenant Jassy was a pilot in the RAF who was tragically killed on 6 November 1918, just a few days before the Armistice brought an end to hostilities. Jassby was originally from Montreal, and like many Canadians, he sacrificed a planned pharmacist career in order to join the British armed forces in World War I. He became a pilot in the fledgling Royal Air Force.

Rabbi Morris was also born in Montreal. Her grandfather had emigrated to Canada from London's Jewish East End in about 1918, at around the same time as the end of that terrible war. She was shocked to discover an amazing coincidence - research revealed that her relatives in Montreal include members of the Jassby family, including two surviving nieces of Harry Jassby.

As the sole Jewish airman buried in the St. Peter's graveyard, the SWESRS community tends to the grave and conducts the annual service as part of the Remembrance Day commemorations.
