SWESRS Social & Community Group – Tales of the Riverside and Old Father Thames
Monday February 22 @ 8:00 pm - 9:15 pm
Eleanor Bloom will be our guide for the evening, taking us on an ‘Armchair Walk’ along the South side of the River Thames which has a very old and salacious history. In 16th century Tudor London, Southwark was outside of the City's jurisdiction and therefore not bound by law and order. As a result, it became a hotbed of drunkenness, vice and prostitution and notorious for its riverside taverns, brothels and gambling dens. It was also a centre for cruel animal sports such as bear baiting & cockfighting. Shakespeare’s playhouses added to the area’s poor reputation (at a time when theatre was not so respectable).
Eleanor is an experienced guide for www.londonatyourfeet.com as well as a very active member of SWESRS.
