Course Description: “We will explore diverse ways the Sages of the Talmud tried to understand the nature and action of God, in the midst of the challenges of their times. Over time, different answers emerged, and the texts we shall study range from the Mishnah and Talmud to early and later midrashim. These texts might shock us with their anthropomorphic way of speaking about the divine, which was so problematic for the philosophers. The Rabbis work through vivid stories and images, rather than abstract ideas. Can they still speak to us today, with all our religious doubts and all our scientific certainties? As we read the texts (in English translation) we will touch on the responses of modern scholars and thinkers.”
