The Great Commentators
5-week course at Sukkat Shalom Reform Synagogue
1 Victory Road, Herman Hill, Wanstead, E11 1UL
Thursday 7.45 – 9.30pm
Dates: 3 – 31 May 2018
Course Description:
We will discover the lives and times of the great Jewish Bible commentators, who debate with one another on the pages of the traditional Rabbinic Bible:
Rashi, who pioneered the exploration of the “plain meaning” (peshat); his grandson Rashbam, and Ibn Ezra, who took the rational investigation of the peshat even further; Kimchi, with a keen literary appreciation of Biblical style; Nahmanides (also known as Ramban) who brings in a mystical approach; and the Renaissance man Obadiah Sforno, among others.
We will examine their distinctive styles and approaches to the Biblical text, and study a selected passage with their comments, to see how diverse the interpretation of the Torah can be.
