Birth

If you have just had a new child or grandchild, mazel tov! We would love to help you welcome them into the world and the Jewish community.

No matter your background or your child’s background, we will find a way to celebrate them in the Jewish tradition.

There are many options for how you might do this.

Synagogue baby blessing

Celebrate with the whole community in our synagogue. This ceremony, which is part of our Shabbat service, enables both parents to thank God for the safe delivery of their child and enables grandparents, relatives and friends to share this precious moment with the whole congregation. You can arrange to have a kiddush or party in the building afterwards.

Private baby blessing

In these uncertain times, some choose to have a more intimate ceremony in their home. One of our rabbis can come to you and create a bespoke ceremony celebrating the newborn’s birth.

Brit milah

If you have a male child, you may want to induct them into the Jewish faith through brit milah - the covenant of circumcision. In Reform Judaism, we organise for trained doctors to perform the operation in a safe way.

Mikveh and confirmation of Jewish status

If your child is Jewish on the father’s side, or has uncertain status, we can ensure your child’s Jewishness is recognised in all Progressive synagogues. We organise for them to attend the mikvah - ritual bath - and get paperwork confirming their Jewish status.
